Warriors coach addresses halves dilemma after Metcalf’s strong return

Metcalf’s Impactful Return

Luke Metcalf delivered a notable performance for the New Zealand Warriors, playing a key role in their 28-12 victory against the Penrith Panthers. This match marked his first NRL game in four months. Metcalf, who is set to join the Dragons next season, was a late inclusion for Te Maire Martin, who is currently sidelined with a hamstring issue.

During the game at Go Media Stadium, Metcalf scored two tries, contributed four conversions, and managed the team’s general-play kicking. His efforts were crucial in the upset win over the ladder-leading Panthers. This performance has created a selection dilemma for coach Andrew Webster as the team approaches the finals.

Coach Webster’s Perspective

Despite Metcalf’s impressive showing, coach Webster remained composed when questioned about his halves selection. He stated he had “no opinion on that at all” regarding who should wear the No.7 jersey. Webster chose to celebrate Metcalf’s performance, acknowledging his recent strong form over the past six weeks.

Webster highlighted the depth in the Warriors’ halves, mentioning players such as Tanah Boyd, Chanel Harris-Tavita, Te Maire Martin, and Metcalf. He expressed confidence in any of these players. The coach emphasised that he is not focused on future selections due to the unpredictable nature of the season, believing that “great players pick themselves each week.”

Webster also noted the importance of competition within the squad, stating that the depth was intentionally designed to foster improvement among players. He explained that training sessions are often the most challenging part of the week, as players push each other to perform better. This competitive environment is seen as beneficial for the club, especially when facing strong teams like Penrith.

Metcalf’s Future and Team Outlook

Metcalf, who signed a three-year deal with the Dragons after an early release from the Warriors, has faced a challenging season due to injuries. He recovered from an ACL injury and then sustained a hamstring injury shortly after returning, which led to other players taking his spot in the lineup. His last game in the halves for the first-grade side was in Round 5 against the Cronulla Sharks, approximately 125 days prior to his recent return.

When asked about his short-term future with the Warriors, Metcalf expressed his desire to play in the NRL but acknowledged that selections are beyond his control. He affirmed his commitment to supporting his teammates and staying prepared for any opportunity. Metcalf’s performance led the way with 562 kicking metres, among other contributions on Friday night.

The victory against Penrith has boosted the Warriors’ confidence and keeps them in contention for the minor premiership. Webster, however, cautioned against complacency, stating that the NRL season is full of “dips and turns.” He stressed the need for continued improvement while also celebrating the team’s achievements.

Webster confirmed that Te Maire Martin is expected to be out for another “2-4 weeks” due to his hamstring issue, which occurred during a training session. Despite Martin’s absence, Webster praised the team’s defensive efforts in training against Metcalf. He also confirmed that Leka Halasima, described as “fearless,” will play in the centres again in the upcoming match.

The Warriors are set to play the Brisbane Broncos in Round 24 as they continue their pursuit of a top-four spot.
