Shane van Gisbergen, driving for Trackhouse Racing, executed a strategic race at Richmond Raceway, navigating through the field despite starting from 31st position. His performance in the NASCAR Cup Series Cook Out 400 saw him make tactical decisions regarding tyre management and pit stops, which ultimately contributed to his race outcome.
Van Gisbergen concluded Stage 1 in 21st place and maintained this position through Stage 2, finishing one lap down. A crucial decision was made during the Stage 2 break when he opted for a wave around to return to the lead lap, even though his tyres were older. This move positioned him 14th at the start of Stage 3, as the last car on the lead lap.
He pitted on Lap 251, which initially cost him two laps, but he quickly regained one due to having fresher tyres. As the subsequent green flag pit stops commenced, van Gisbergen extended his run, eventually finding himself back on the tail end of the lead lap.
Key Race Incidents and Strategic Plays
A significant moment in the race occurred on Lap 284 when Carson Hocevar’s Spire Motorsports Chevrolet Camaro experienced an engine failure. This incident, caused by a shift from fifth to third gear, provided a substantial advantage to van Gisbergen, who was nearing his scheduled pit stop. Tyler Reddick also benefited from this caution, having run long to secure the lead during the green flag pit stops.
Under the subsequent yellow flag, Reddick led Denny Hamlin, Ryan Blaney, William Byron, and van Gisbergen to the pits. Following the corrected order, Chase Briscoe led Joey Logano, Austin Cindric, Josh Berry, and Alex Bowman for the restart. Van Gisbergen was positioned 13th, with Kyle Larson in 14th as the last car on the lead lap.
Briscoe controlled the restart and the laps that followed. Van Gisbergen made efforts to break into the top 10 but ultimately finished a lap down in 14th place. Post-race, he communicated his satisfaction with the team’s performance, stating, “Awesome job team. Good pit stops, good strategy, good points night. It’s what we need.”
The battle for the win intensified between Briscoe, Logano, and Christopher Bell. Briscoe maintained control until Lap 362 when Logano overtook him. Both drivers pitted a lap later, with Logano’s #22 Team Penske Ford Mustang emerging ahead of Briscoe’s car.
Bell’s earlier pit stop strategy, intended to undercut the leaders, did not pay off in the final stages of the race. With 25 laps remaining, Logano and Briscoe passed Bell, who subsequently lost positions to Cindric, Hamlin, and Larson. Briscoe challenged Logano for the lead in the closing laps but finished just a few car lengths behind.
Logano expressed his satisfaction with the victory, noting the speed of his car and the team’s consistent performance. “It’s awesome to see the speed in the #22 again,” he said. “Gosh, it was a great car. We’ve had a great car here the last five races and we haven’t been able to capitalise on the win, been so close. Sweet redemption today.”
Impact on Standings and Upcoming Races
Cindric’s third-place finish and stage points elevated the #2 Team Penske Ford Mustang driver to 15th in the points standings, placing him ahead of van Gisbergen. Meanwhile, RFK Racing driver Ryan Preece is 17th, 50 points below the cut line for the postseason.
This Cup Series race followed van Gisbergen’s strong showing in the NASCAR Truck Series at Richmond Raceway. In his latest Truck Series appearance, he secured a fourth-place finish despite incurring a penalty. He had also achieved a career-first pole position on an oval track in stock car racing during qualifying for the Truck Series event.
From four starts this season in the third-tier series, van Gisbergen has recorded three top-four finishes, including a third-place at Watkins Glen and North Wilkesboro. During the Truck Series race, he led the opening two laps before Kaden Honeycutt took over, leading 225 laps to claim a dominant victory. Van Gisbergen’s race in the Truck Series was complicated by a lost wheel during a pit stop, resulting in a penalty that dropped him to 18th. However, he recovered by running long and benefiting from a caution on lap 216 of 250, moving back up the order despite another pit stop issue.
The NASCAR Cup Series is scheduled to continue at New Hampshire on August 24 (AEST).

Van Gisbergen’s strategic approach at Richmond Raceway highlights his adaptability in the NASCAR circuits. His efforts in both the Truck Series and Cup Series contribute to his overall experience and standing in the sport. The NASCAR Cup Series will proceed with its next event.
