Sydney Roosters’ Sam Walker contract talks stall, attracting rival interest

Contract negotiations between Sam Walker and the Sydney Roosters have reached an impasse, potentially leading the halfback to explore options with other NRL clubs. Initially, it appeared Walker was set to extend his contract, with his camp reportedly seeking a 10-year deal. However, reports indicate that Walker declined a four-year, $5 million extension from the Roosters.

This development suggests Walker could enter free agency on November 1, drawing attention from new expansion franchises, the PNG Chiefs and Perth Bears, as well as a Queensland club.

Potential Destinations for Walker

The PNG Chiefs are among the clubs showing interest, with the ability to offer a substantial tax-free contract. The Chiefs have been active in the player market, having already signed Jarome Luai and Brian To’o. Their headquarters feature a staircase with numbered steps for marquee player announcements, and the No. 7 step is marked as ‘reserved,’ indicating their intent to secure a halfback. While Nathan Cleary is a primary target, Walker is now also on their radar. The Chiefs could potentially offer Walker at least $1.2 million per season, tax-free, according to reports.

Ivan Cleary, coach of Penrith, noted that other NRL clubs might struggle to compete with the offers from the Chiefs. This situation marks a rare instance where the Roosters, a prominent club, might not be able to match a rival’s financial package.

The Perth Bears, another new franchise, could also make a significant offer for Walker. The Bears have not yet secured a marquee signing, and the recent news regarding Walker’s contract situation presents an opportunity. The NRL has granted the Bears a 20 per cent marquee player salary cap exemption, allowing club sponsors to supplement player contracts outside the salary cap. This exemption means the Bears could offer Walker at least $250,000 more per season than the Roosters. There is speculation the Bears might even consider the 10-year deal Walker’s representatives were reportedly seeking.

However, a potential challenge for the Bears is that Walker might be hesitant to leave a club like the Roosters for a franchise many anticipate will struggle in 2027. A move to a less successful team could also impact his eligibility for the State of Origin jersey, a situation seen with Luai after his move to Wests Tigers.

Roosters’ Stance and Management Concerns

Roosters coach Trent Robinson has expressed his support for Walker’s decision to delay contract talks until after the season, allowing the player to focus on the team’s current campaign. Robinson stated that the vision for Walker’s future with the club is clear and that he has no issues waiting until October for further discussions. He also highlighted the Roosters’ long-term investment in Walker, who has been with the club since he was 16.

Despite this, Robinson voiced disappointment regarding the leaking of details from Tuesday’s contract meeting. He suggested the information likely came from Walker’s management, given that only a few individuals were present at the negotiations. Robinson also dismissed earlier suggestions of a 10-year, “lifetime” contract being offered to the 24-year-old.

The Roosters have a history of making tough personnel decisions, exemplified by the departure of Mitchell Pearce to accommodate Cooper Cronk. Walker’s tenure at the Roosters has been described as “interesting,” with previous instances of being dropped from the NRL side and questions raised about his long-term role as halfback. Earlier this year, there were inquiries about why the club had not moved to re-sign Walker before other clubs could approach him.

The club reportedly did not want to re-sign Walker to a multi-million dollar deal until they observed his performance in his first State of Origin series. There was a perception within the game that while Walker possessed talent, he might not be capable of guiding a team to a grand final victory. The Roosters even brought in veteran Daly Cherry-Evans to assist Walker.

Walker’s current contract is set to expire at the end of 2027, meaning he can officially engage in negotiations with rival clubs starting November 1 if an extension is not agreed upon before then.

Impact on Player Market and Other Clubs

The situation with Walker’s contract is indicative of a dynamic player market, influenced by the entry of expansion clubs like PNG and Perth. Robinson acknowledges that the expansion teams, with their ability to offer tax-free wages and third-party deals, create an uneven playing field. However, he views the expansion of the game as a positive development, despite the challenges it poses for existing clubs in retaining talent.

The contract speculation surrounding Walker also brings renewed attention to the long-standing rumours linking Nathan Cleary of the Panthers to the Roosters. Reports from April suggested that the Roosters, known for pursuing high-profile signings, might be interested in Cleary if he were to become available on November 1. While it is difficult to imagine Cleary playing against Penrith, his unsigned status could open up possibilities.

Other clubs are also navigating contract discussions. Penrith faces the challenge of securing Cleary and Isaah Yeo before they can consider rival offers. The Canberra Raiders are reportedly hoping to re-sign NSW star Hudson Young with a $3 million, three-year offer before November 1. Additionally, the Brisbane Broncos could become a contender for Walker’s services following the retirement of Adam Reynolds.

The ongoing contract discussions create an awkward atmosphere for the Roosters as they approach the finals series. Journalists have suggested that resolving the contract situation would alleviate pressure on Walker and allow him to focus fully on his performance. Walker’s recent performances have been described as inconsistent, with a strong showing against the Cowboys followed by a less impactful game against the Bulldogs.

The Roosters are scheduled to face the Panthers on Thursday night in a match that could influence the minor premiership.
