Canterbury to defend Ranfurly Shield against Bay of Plenty in Christchurch

Canterbury is set to defend the Ranfurly Shield against Bay of Plenty at One New Zealand Stadium in Christchurch. This match marks Canterbury’s first defence of the shield since their recent 19-15 victory over Otago at Forsyth Barr Stadium.

The challenge comes less than a week after Canterbury claimed the shield. Bay of Plenty, also known as the Steamers, are aiming for their first shield victory since 2004. The kickoff for the match is scheduled for 2.05pm.

Steamers eye historic win

For the Bay of Plenty Steamers, this match represents an opportunity to secure their first Ranfurly Shield win in over two decades. Their last reign with the shield ended in 2004, also at the hands of Canterbury. Steamers head coach Richard Watt described the event as a rare opportunity, encouraging his team to embrace the history surrounding the challenge.

Watt, who has coached in the National Provincial Championship (NPC) for 13 years, noted that this will be his third shield challenge as a coach. He highlighted the unique nature of such a match, stating that some players might go through their entire careers without experiencing a shield challenge. The significance of the Ranfurly Shield was also explored in the 2024 fan-made documentary, Up for the Challenge – The Reunion, which commemorated 20 years since the Steamers’ triumph.

Watt compared the upcoming Ranfurly Shield challenge to a heavyweight title fight, calling it the ultimate prize in provincial rugby. He emphasised the team’s preparation to be physically and mentally fresh for the Saturday game, aiming to give them the best possible chance.

The Steamers picked up their first win of the season last week against Northland, building momentum for this significant encounter. Canterbury, the reigning NPC champions, are known for their strong defensive capabilities, making opponents work hard for every point. Watt acknowledged Canterbury’s disciplined approach and their ability to limit scoring opportunities through their defence, stating that his team needs to find ways to crack it.

Despite the prospect of a home shield game in Rotorua the following weekend if Bay of Plenty were to win, Watt confirmed the team’s focus remains solely on the upcoming match. He reiterated that their job is to prepare thoroughly and execute the right game plan to win, with the shield being a product of that effort.

Naitoa Ah Kuoi will captain the Steamers side for this historic challenge. Ah Kuoi underscored the enduring history and significance of the Ranfurly Shield, noting its role in keeping the game alive for a long time. He expressed the team’s readiness for the challenge against the reigning champions, acknowledging it would be a significant achievement to bring the shield back to Bay of Plenty after 22 years.

The team is working on balancing the importance of the shield challenge with treating it like any other match, focusing on daily improvements. This match will also mark the first shield challenge to be held at the new One New Zealand Stadium in Christchurch.

Canterbury’s lineup adjustments

Canterbury will be without their star first-five, Richie Mo’unga, for this defence. Mo’unga has been called up to the All Blacks squad for their tour of South Africa. This adjustment means Canterbury will need to adapt their lineup for the crucial shield defence.

  • Tevita Mafileo
  • Seuseu Naitoa Ah Kuoi (C)

  • Nikora Broughton
  • Te Toiroa Tahuriorangi
