Darwin: Bangladesh secure historic first Test win in Australia

Historic Victory for Bangladesh in Darwin

Bangladesh has achieved a significant milestone in Test cricket, defeating Australia by nine wickets in the first match of a two-Test series in Darwin. This marks Bangladesh’s first-ever Test victory on Australian soil, completing what has been described as one of Test cricket’s greatest upsets. The visitors dominated the match from the outset, showcasing strong performances with both bat and ball.

The match concluded on the fourth day, with Bangladesh successfully chasing down a target of 57 runs for the loss of just one wicket. Mominul Haque sealed the win by cutting Beau Webster to the boundary. This triumph sparked widespread celebration among the Bangladesh players and staff, marking arguably their most significant victory in 26 years of Test cricket competition.

Despite Australia being the top-ranked Test nation, Bangladesh, ranked ninth, maintained control throughout the fixture. Their last Test series in Australia was a 2-0 defeat in 2003. The victory is particularly notable given that Bangladesh had been bowled out for just 54 by a Cricket Australia XI in a warm-up match days prior to the series opener.

Key Performances Drive Bangladesh to Success

Spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz was a pivotal figure in Bangladesh’s historic win, particularly on day four. He claimed 5-66 in Australia’s second innings, contributing significantly to dismissing the hosts for 284. His performance left Bangladesh needing only 57 runs for victory. Miraz’s impactful bowling included dismissing Australia captain Pat Cummins for eight, and wicketkeeper Alex Carey for 30. He also bowled all-rounder Beau Webster for five with a pair of deliveries.

Miraz’s bowling heroics followed a crucial batting contribution on day three, where he scored 65 runs. This knock helped Bangladesh establish a substantial first innings lead. He also dismissed talismanic batter Steve Smith in Australia’s second innings, setting the stage for the win.

Paceman Hasan Mahmud was named player of the match for his exceptional bowling. He took 6-55 in the first innings and followed up with 3-56 in the second. His early performance in the match, where he helped skittle Australia for 198 in their first innings, announced him as a rising star.

For Australia, all-rounder Cameron Green showed resilience, scoring a defiant 104 runs in the second innings. This was his third Test century and his first on home soil. He was eventually bowled by Mahmud, which significantly diminished Australia’s hopes of saving the Test. Green’s century came amidst scrutiny regarding his place in the team.

Team Effort and Mindset Shift

Bangladesh’s batting display was also strong, compiling 426 runs in their first innings. Tanzid Hasan scored a magnificent 101 in only his second Test match, demonstrating controlled aggression mixed with patience. Australia’s fielding blunders, including dropping five catches, further aided Bangladesh’s advantage.

Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto expressed immense pride in his team’s performance, calling it the biggest win for Bangladesh in any format. He highlighted the hard work put in by the team and spoke of a desire to achieve more special feats in the future. Shanto also noted a significant mindset shift among the team’s pacemen, who are now eager to play and perform in Test cricket.

The victory was achieved despite Bangladesh entering the match against a full-strength Australian team without two of their leading fast bowlers, Nahid Rana and Shoriful Islam, who were out injured. Australia captain Pat Cummins acknowledged Bangladesh’s superior performance, stating that they outplayed Australia in all facets, demonstrating patience and discipline.

The second Test of the series is scheduled to begin on 22 August.
