Cardiff: Arsenal secure dominant Community Shield victory over Manchester City

Arsenal’s strong start to the season

Arsenal began their season with a commanding 3-0 victory over Manchester City in the Community Shield in Cardiff. Goals from Riccardo Calafiori, Kai Havertz, and Martin Ødegaard secured the win for the Gunners. This result marked a challenging start for City’s new manager, Enzo Maresca, in his first competitive match since taking over from Pep Guardiola.

The match saw Arsenal take an early lead, with Calafiori scoring just 23 seconds into the game. Havertz then doubled their advantage in the 28th minute, followed by Ødegaard’s goal three minutes into the second half. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta expressed surprise at his team’s convincing performance, noting their impressive display so early in the season.

Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown commented on the significant difference between the two teams, stating that the gap was “really quite stunning.” He observed that Arsenal played with intensity, while Manchester City appeared “lifeless.” Former Scotland striker Ally McCoist also described City’s performance as “a bit of a schooling,” raising concerns despite it being early in the season.

Key performances and tactical insights

Christos Tzolis, a new signing for Arsenal, delivered a standout performance, playing a role in all three goals and providing two assists. He was noted for his ability to switch play and his overall involvement in Arsenal’s attacking movements. Myles Lewis-Skelly also contributed significantly to the opening goal with a crucial pass.

In contrast, Elliot Anderson, City’s £116m summer signing, had an underwhelming debut after his World Cup stint. City’s defence, particularly goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, faced scrutiny for their performance. Donnarumma was deemed at fault for Arsenal’s second goal and was notably outmanoeuvred by Ødegaard for the third.

The underlying statistics highlighted Arsenal’s dominance, with the Gunners creating 2.19 expected goals (xG) compared to City’s 0.77. This marked Arsenal’s biggest victory to nil against Manchester City since August 2014, when they also won 3-0 in the Community Shield.

Squad changes and future outlook

Both teams have seen significant changes in their squads during the summer transfer window. Manchester City allowed Bernardo Silva and John Stones to leave on free transfers, while Manuel Akanji, Nathan Ake, and James Trafford were sold. Key player Rodri is reportedly heading to Barcelona in a £65m deal, with Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez considered a potential replacement.

Arsenal, on the other hand, have primarily sold fringe players such as Leandro Trossard, Jakub Kiwior, and Christian Norgaard. They have strengthened their squad with the additions of Bruno Guimaraes and Christos Tzolis, and secured Piero Hincapie on a permanent deal after his loan spell. Guimaraes, wearing the No 39 shirt, made a comfortable debut in midfield.

The victory has fuelled optimism among Arsenal fans for the upcoming season, with captain Ødegaard stating the team showed they are “ready” and “serious” about winning more trophies. Sports data analysts at Opta have positioned Arsenal as favourites for the Premier League title, giving them a 38% chance of lifting the trophy. This would be Arsenal’s first successful top-flight title defence since the 1934-35 season.

Maresca, however, downplayed the significance of the Community Shield result, stating, “It’s a defeat that hurts us, but it’s just the beginning.” He acknowledged concerns but emphasised that the team has just started and has many areas to improve. Manchester City were the last team to win the Community Shield and then go on to win the league, achieving this in the 2018-19 season.

Arsenal will begin their Premier League title defence at home against Coventry in the season’s curtain-raiser on Friday, while Manchester City will host Bournemouth next Sunday.
